About This Attraction

The Legendary Bamboo Train of Battambang: An Unforgettable Ride

The Bamboo Train, locally known as Norry, is an iconic and utterly unique mode of transport that has become one of Battambang’s most beloved attractions. Far from a conventional railway, the Norry consists of a simple, low-slung bamboo platform, powered by a small engine and designed to run along disused railway tracks. This ingenious creation offers visitors an exhilarating and authentic journey through the serene Cambodian countryside, providing a captivating glimpse into local life and resourcefulness. A ride on the Bamboo Train is more than just a scenic trip; it’s a cultural immersion and a testament to Cambodian ingenuity.

A History Forged from Necessity and Innovation

The origins of Battambang’s Bamboo Train are rooted in necessity. Following the devastation of the Khmer Rouge regime and the subsequent civil unrest, Cambodia's infrastructure, including its railway network, was left in ruins. With roads often impassable or non-existent, local villagers in the Battambang province devised this makeshift rail system using available materials. They repurposed abandoned French colonial railway tracks and fashioned platforms from bamboo slats, powered by small gasoline engines, often salvaged from old generators or motorcycles. The Norry served as a vital lifeline for transporting goods like rice, crops, and livestock, as well as people, connecting remote villages to markets and towns.

For decades, these humble bamboo trains were an integral part of daily life. As Cambodia began to stabilize and develop, its road network improved, diminishing the Norry’s role as primary transport. However, its unique charm and historical significance soon caught the attention of tourists, transforming it into a celebrated cultural experience. Originally operating on a section of track near the village of O Dambang, the Bamboo Train was relocated in 2017 to a new, shorter stretch of track south of Battambang city, near Choeung Ek, to make way for the country's planned restoration of its national railway system. This relocation ensured the preservation of this beloved attraction for future generations of visitors.

What to Expect on Your Bamboo Train Adventure

Your Bamboo Train experience typically begins with a tuk-tuk ride from Battambang city to the starting point, usually a small, bustling area where several Norry platforms are lined up. After purchasing your ticket, you'll be invited to board your private bamboo platform. Cushions are often provided for comfort, but the ride itself is an open-air affair, exposing you to the elements and the vibrant Cambodian landscape.

Once the small engine roars to life, you’ll begin your journey, often reaching speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour. The sensation is exhilarating: the wind whips through your hair, the rhythmic clatter of the wheels on the tracks fills the air, and the panoramic views unfold before you. You'll glide past emerald green rice paddies, towering palm trees, small traditional villages, and local farmers tending their fields. Keep an eye out for water buffalo lazily grazing or children waving as you pass by.
