Dien Bien Phu – Where History Changed the World
Dien Bien Phu is one of the most historically significant locations in modern world history. On 7 May 1954, Viet Minh forces defeated the French garrison here in a 57-day siege, ending French colonial rule in Indochina and directly influencing decolonisation movements worldwide. Today the valley contains an outstanding array of war memorials and museums: General de Castries' bunker, Eliane Hill A1, the Dien Bien Phu Museum and the French Military Cemetery. The surrounding Muong Thanh Valley – the largest valley in Northwest Vietnam – is home to Thai ethnic communities and scenic rice paddies. Flights available from Hanoi (1 hour) or overland via Son La (6 hours).
