For normal travel periods, booking 6–12 weeks ahead gives a good choice of guides, hotels and domestic transport. For Christmas, New Year, Lunar New Year, Easter and July–August, we recommend 3–6 months. Premium Ha Long Bay cabins, specialist guides and connecting rooms can sell out earlier.

Allow about 7–10 days for one region, 12–15 days for a balanced north-to-south journey, and 18–21 days for a slower trip with beach time. We avoid building itineraries around daily flights or long transfers unless the traveller specifically prefers a faster pace.
